CONTEMPORARY TYPE: POSTER DESIGN
2020

Poster designs for a series of imaginary lectures on contemporary type design. Text and shapes only; no images. All text content provided by the professor.

Ideation

Given only text and shape to work with, I wanted to use the headline as a "graphic" or interest point. I iterated through some layouts to try and narrow down what I wanted.

Fabrication & Iteration

The posters were made in Illustrator.
I spent a lot of time trying to work out the typefaces and alignment of the headline on the poster with the blue blob. It wasn't looking quite as good as I had imagined. After input from class critique, I tried to loosen up and changed the number blocks to organic blobs, matching the initial blue one and switched to Playfair Display from my original sans serif for the numbers to give it more peronality.
For the jumbled letters on the other poster version, I started by just placing the letters without thought, later moving some things around to improve legibility and shape overall. I had a red/orange version and a blue/green version that gave off very different moods. The red seemed a little too "exciting" so I went with the blue in the end.
